On Top of His Game

Justin Wolfinger of Macungie has his diabetes under control

Leanne Wolfinger of Macungie, Pa., was shocked and scared when her son, Justin, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes two years ago. “It was overwhelming because he went to the emergency department and stayed in the pediatric intensive care unit,” she says. “I knew he could die if we didn’t do things right. I needed information and support.”

The Wolfingers found help from the pediatric specialists and program at the Helwig Health and Diabetes Center at Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network. They attended insulin pump classes to help Justin use the pump that regulates his blood sugar and also the Sugar-Free Kids support group.

They also attended a class where Justin, now 12, met college athletes with diabetes.

Justin plays football, baseball and basketball. With the help of caregivers at Helwig, he doesn’t expect diabetes to hold him back.
